The letter will explain which bins to present on which weeks, ensuring residents are fully informed about how the new schedule will operate. It will also include the date residents should switch their black-lidded bin and start using it for mixed recycling. From 21 July, residents can also check their new collection dates online at myaccount.eastherts.gov.uk/waste-services
This is part of an initiative to improve recycling rates, reduce the amount of waste we throw away, and deliver a more sustainable service across the district.
In addition to the letter, households will also receive a service leaflet providing further information on what materials should go in each bin. The leaflet includes practical advice and top tips on how residents can maximise the space in their bins, such as how to prepare recyclable materials and reduce contamination.
The new service will see the introduction of a new weekly food waste collection, while the collection of mixed recycling, paper/cardboard, and non-recyclable waste will move to a three-weekly cycle. Garden waste collections will continue to be fortnightly for those who subscribe to the service.
Councillor Tim Hoskin, Executive Member for Environmental Sustainability at East Herts Council, said: “We understand this is a significant change, but we hope residents will soon notice the difference it makes. By using the new food waste service and recycling soft plastics, most will find there's more room in their non-recyclable (purple-lidded) bins. We’ve included plenty of helpful information in the service leaflet, and we encourage everyone to take a moment to read it.
“We would also like to take this opportunity to thank residents for their patience during the delivery of the new bins—an extensive logistical operation—and for their continued understanding as we work to resolve any outstanding issues that may have arisen during the process.”
Anyone who believes they may have been missed and have not received their new bins, or who has received the incorrect bins, should contact the council as soon as possible to ensure they are ready for Monday, 4 August. This can be done by filling out an online form or emailing the Customer Services team.
