East Herts Council is launching a new rewards-based programme this summer to encourage healthier, greener travel choices while supporting local businesses and charities.

Funded by East Herts District Council through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, the BetterPoints East Herts scheme aims to inspire residents to swap short car journeys for walking, cycling, wheeling and public transport.

Local people can simply download the free BetterPoints app and use it to record journeys made on foot, by bike, in a wheelchair, by bus or train. Each eligible journey earns BetterPoints, which can be redeemed at participating local businesses, exchanged for major brand vouchers or donated to local charities.

By making small changes to everyday travel habits, residents can help reduce congestion, improve air quality and improve their health.

Jack Windle, Chief Sustainable Transport Officer at BetterPoints, said: “East Herts is a district that’s on the move and BetterPoints is the perfect companion for that journey. We know that small, everyday choices — like walking to the shops, cycling to work or taking the bus — all add up to real change, both for people’s health and for our streets.

“This programme makes those choices rewarding in the most literal sense and we’re proud and excited to be bringing it to everyone in East Herts this summer. We aim to help residents move more, reduce car journeys and support local businesses and charities all at the same time.”

Councillor Tim Hoskin, Executive Member for Environmental Sustainability at East Herts District Council, added: “We’re committed to making East Herts a healthier, greener and more connected place to live and that means investing in schemes that help residents make positive changes in their daily lives.

“BetterPoints does exactly that. It’s free, it’s simple and it puts real rewards in the hands of people who are doing the right thing.”

The BetterPoints East Herts scheme is open to anyone who lives, works or studies in the district.

BetterPoints is also inviting local employers, businesses and charities to get involved. By partnering with the scheme, organisations can support transport, health and climate goals while increasing visibility among thousands of active and engaged people in East Herts.

Whether you are a café, cycle shop, community organisation or local charity, joining BetterPoints can help connect your organisation with local people making positive travel choices.

As an added incentive, everyone who signs up before 31 July will be entered into a prize draw to win £100 in BetterPoints.
