Residents are being invited to share the places, buildings, and public spaces they love most as East Herts Council creates a new District Design Code.

The District Design Code will help shape the design of future development across East Herts, setting out clear expectations for high-quality design and helping to ensure new development respects the character of the district.

Once adopted, the Design Code will provide a clear framework for achieving high-quality, locally distinctive development across East Herts. It will be a key tool in shaping future development and supporting decision-making on planning applications.

As an important first step, the council wants to hear what local people value about the places around them – from neighbourhoods, streets and buildings to parks and open spaces.

Residents are being asked what they think makes East Herts a great place, which buildings and spaces they think are particularly well designed, and what they think could be improved.

They can also upload a photo of a place or design features they particularly like and explain what makes them work well.

Sara Saunders, Director for Place and Deputy Chief Executive at East Herts Council, said:

“East Herts has a really distinctive character, shaped by our historic towns and villages, countryside, buildings, streets and green spaces.

“Our new Design Code will have a real influence on the development we see in the future, so it’s important that local people have the opportunity to help shape it from the very beginning.

“We want to understand what people value about the places they live in and visit every day. That could be a whole street or public space, a newer development that works particularly well, or simply a small detail on a building that adds to its character.

“Good design has a huge impact on how a place looks, feels and works for the people who use it. By getting involved now, residents can help us set the standard for future development and make sure we create places that people can be proud of.”

The feedback will help the council understand the features and characteristics people value and will inform the development of the District Design Code.

Residents can share their views and upload photographs at https://yourvoice.eastherts.gov.uk/district-design-code

The engagement is open until Thursday, 12 November.
