East Herts residents are reminded that the upcoming Hertfordshire County Council elections will take place on Thursday, 1 May 2025. To ensure you can cast your vote, there are several important deadlines and information to be aware of.

Research shows that young people, students and those who have recently moved are less likely to be registered than others. The deadline to register to vote is midnight on Friday, 11 April 2025. Voters can apply online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. It takes just five minutes.

Once registered, voters have a range of options – they can vote in person, by post or by appointing someone they trust to vote in their place, known as a proxy vote.

If you would prefer to vote by post, you must apply by for a postal vote by 5pm on Monday, 14 April 2025. Or if you are unable to vote in person on election day, you can appoint someone to vote on your behalf by applying for a proxy vote. The deadline for proxy vote applications is 5pm on Wednesday, 23 April 2025.

For residents who are already registered, your polling card will be arriving soon. Please take particular note of your polling station location as some have changed. The location of your polling station is clearly stated on your polling card, so be sure to check it before election day.

While you do not need to bring your polling card with you to vote on election day, voter ID is required. You can use various forms of identification, including your driving licence, passport, blue badge, or certain concessionary travel cards. For a full list of acceptable ID, please visit our website. If you do not have any of the accepted IDs, you can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate (VAC) by 5pm on Wednesday, 23 April 2025.

Helen Standen, Returning Officer for East Herts Council, said: “It’s so important to make sure that you have your say at local elections. The results of the election will determine who represents you and makes decisions about issues that directly affect day-to-day life here in East Herts and across Hertfordshire.

“If you’re in doubt about whether you need to register to vote, please contact the East Herts Council elections team. The council website has all of the information about how to apply for a postal or proxy vote, or free ID if you don’t have a valid form of photo ID.”
