Following the introduction of three-weekly collections, East Herts and North Herts Councils have launched a new mobile app to help residents manage their waste and recycling more easily.
The councils recognise that the change in service has created challenges for some households, particularly with remembering which bin goes out on which day. The new app helps residents stay on top of collections by sending tailored reminders direct to their phone or device, including changes during bank holidays and periods of bad weather.
The app, available to download on both Apple and Android devices, offers:
- Personalised bin day reminders
- A clear guide on what goes into each bin
- Links to local councillors and nearby council-run facilities such as car parks, parks and play areas
- The latest council news and updates
Residents can also be redirected to the council website to report missed bins or raise other issues. Work is underway to integrate these reporting features directly into the app later this year.
Looking ahead, the councils plan to expand the app’s features so residents can use it not only for waste and recycling but also to access a wider range of local services and information in one place.
Cllr Tim Hoskin, Executive Member for Environmental Sustainability at East Herts Council, said: “We know people increasingly rely on apps to manage everyday tasks such as banking or booking travel. Our new app brings all the essential information residents need right to their fingertips – from bin reminders to recycling guidance.
“It’s a small but practical step that will help households adapt to the new collection system while also improving the quality of recycling.
“We also expect the app to reduce the number of waste-related calls to our customer services teams, as more residents can report issues or quickly find the answers they’re looking for. And by reducing these routine calls, our teams will have more time to support residents who may not have internet access or who need a little extra help with their services.”
