East and North Hertfordshire residents are being invited to take part in a competition to name the districts’ fleet of waste and recycling vehicles, ahead of the launch of a new bin collection service, which starts the week commencing 4 August 2025.

From Monday, 9 June, residents can submit their creative, clever, or chuckle-worthy name suggestions for the new trucks, which will soon be hard at work across the districts. The competition is open to East and North Herts residents of all ages, and winners will not only see their chosen name featured on one of the vehicles, but will also receive a certificate and an electronic photo of their named truck—perfect for bragging rights!

James Ellis, Director for Legal, Policy and Governance at East Herts Council, said: “This is a fun and creative way to celebrate the introduction of our new fleet and to get the community involved in something they’ll see every week. We know how imaginative our residents are, and we can’t wait to see the fantastic names you come up with.”

Councillor Amy Allen, Executive Member for Environment at North Herts Council, said: “These vehicles play a vital role in keeping our communities clean and sustainable. By giving them names, we hope residents—especially children—will feel more connected to the service and the people behind it. It’s a great chance to engage, have a laugh, and be part of something meaningful.”

The deadline for entries is midnight on Monday, 30 June 2025, and a judging panel consisting of collection crew members, councillors, and the waste team will select the winners.
