At the meeting, outgoing chair Cllr Connelly thanked members and officers for their support during her time in office, highlighting the important role the council plays in serving local communities.
On his election, Cllr Martin Adams said, “I am humbled to be elected chairman of East Herts District Council, representing this dynamic listening council for the betterment of our local communities and democracy. My objective for the year will be to spend time and effort in creating a more productive debating chamber for all, as a healthy public forum will certainly benefit both residents and members.”
“I have yet to choose my designated fundraising cause but will endeavour to seek out a local organisation within East Herts to support during my term”.
The meeting of Full Council also marked the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day with the announcement that the council has begun its journey toward achieving the Silver Award in the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme.
This scheme recognises organisations that pledge, demonstrate, or advocate support for defence and the armed forces community, and that align their values with the Armed Forces Covenant. East Herts Council signed up for the Armed Forces Covenant three years ago and achieved the Bronze Award under the scheme in November 2022, in recognition of the council’s positive approach to encouraging job applications from those transitioning to civilian life.
To further strengthen the council’s commitment to support former military personnel, it was also announced at the Full Council meeting that the council has signed up to Operation Ascend — a government-backed employment service that connects veterans with veteran-friendly employers.
