East Herts Council has received a bronze award as part of the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme.

Operated by the Ministry of Defence, the scheme recognises public and private sector organisations which have a proactive approach towards supporting serving and former Armed Forces personnel and their families.

The support East Herts Council provides includes helping former services personnel access affordable homes and encouraging job applications from those transitioning to civilian life.

The council is also active in supporting community events which commemorate the work of the Armed Forces.  Recently, these have included an educational trip to the First World War battlefields in Belgium for the Watton at Stone Scouts and Guides, and a ‘Nostalgia Day’ to bring people together in Sawbridgeworth to reminisce and learn about the Armed Forces.

Councillor Andrew Huggins, the council’s Armed Forces Champion, said: ‘We are committed to supporting serving Armed Forces personnel, reservists, veterans and their families across East Herts.  We are therefore delighted to receive recognition for the work we do.’

In addition to direct support, East Herts Council has a new policy in place to encourage companies receiving contracts from the council to offer help and support to veterans in East Herts.
