Bishop’s Stortford Swimming Club – a not for profit organisation run by coaches, teachers and volunteers - signed up to the East Herts Lottery in 2020 to help raise vital funds needed following the impacts of Covid-19 and temporary closure of their coaching programmes and learn to swim school.

Since joining they’ve raised over £2,400 and used the funds to help keep costs down for members and support children in the local area to learn to swim, as well nurturing talent through to national and international level.

Playing the lottery has benefitted the club’s supporters too – they have scooped £1,150 in prize money – including three £250 winners. The supporter’s chances have also been boosted by winning 267 extra tickets over the 114 draws.

Speaking on behalf of Bishop’s Stortford Swimming Club, Lorinda Pieterson, BSSC Club President said:

“The impacts of Covid-19 and closure of swimming pools had a huge impact on clubs across the country and the funds raised via the East Herts Lottery enabled us to cover our costs and ensure we were there to support our swimming community as soon as we were able.

“Since restrictions were lifted we have continued to use the regular income to help keep our membership fees low, but are now moving to a more secure position where we can use it for more exciting projects that will directly benefit our swimmers.  We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone that plays the lottery and chose us as a cause to support.”

Executive Member for Communities at East Herts Council, Cllr Jonathan Kaye said:

“The aim of the East Herts Lottery is to support local community groups, charities, voluntary organisations and sports clubs, and I’m delighted Bishop’s Stortford Swimming Club have been able to use this regular source of income to help support their local swimming community.”

The East Herts Lottery was set up in 2019 and so far has helped to raise over £150,000 in funding for local clubs, charities and organisations across East Herts.
