A Listening Council

East Herts Council has produced a set of principles providing a template for how the council will inform, engage and consult with its residents, businesses and other stakeholders. These principles are referred to as ‘building blocks’ and the Listening Council approach sets out how best we can achieve this.

The building blocks are outlined below and the document itself details what each of the building blocks looks like in practice, with the addition of a few short bullet points.

1.    Transparency
2.    Straightforward, jargon-free messaging
3.    Involvement methods tailored to the locality, community and topic
4.    A genuine desire to listen
5.    Multi-channel involvement; not simply relying on online methods
6.    Reaching out to those whose voices can sometimes go unheard
7.    Allowing people to access council information to the depth they prefer
8.    A central, active role for all elected members
9.    Listening to feedback

It is hoped that residents, businesses and stakeholders will come to recognise that their views on and input to these principles have been listened to and have influenced the approach to how future decisions are to be made.

The council would like to consult and listen to a wide array of insights and opinions as possible, promoting equality and diversity. To gauge opinions the consultation on the Listening Council report will run throughout April.
