No Mow May

”No Mow May” is a national campaign that encourages people to stop mowing their lawns during the month of May, so that wildflowers can grow to provide food and habitat for pollinators and other wildlife.
Does the Council participate in No Mow May?

The Council’s targeted and long-term approach to managing parks and open spaces in East Herts means we support and encourage bio-diversity all year round – not just in May.

We encourage biodiversity by allowing grass in some areas to grow longer, creating meadow habitats where wildflowers can grow. These areas are only cut once or twice a year, when the time is right, to support the natural lifecycle of plants and insects and create longer lasting habitats. In other areas, we mow the grass to allow pathways and habitat variation, and we will continue this approach throughout May.

In order to help ensure the safety of our residents by maintaining clear visibility for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians, we will be continuing to cut grass on highway verges during “No Mow May".

What can I do to get involved in No Mow May?

Leaving even a small patch of your garden uncut can provide vital food and shelter for pollinators and other wildlife. We encourage you to leave a patch of your garden uncut for as long as you can – throughout May and into the rest of the year!

If every household in East Herts left just 1m2 of grass to grow, it could create more than 50,000m2 of extra habitat for pollinators and insects, equivalent to seven full-sized football pitches!
