Make a New Benefit Claim

The fastest way to assess your eligibility for Housing Benefit or Council Tax Support is by using our online Benefits Claim Form.

Council Tax Support

To find out if you're able to claim council tax support, please visit our council tax support web page.

Council Tax support will be shown as a reduction on your Council Tax bill.

Housing Benefits - New Claim

From 3 October 2018 if you are of working age and need to make a new claim for Housing costs you will have to claim Universal Credit instead, directly administered by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

There are some exception groups who can continue to claim from us in the same way:

  • pensioners
  • customers living in temporary/emergency/supported accommodation.

In these situations, please see our Housing Benefit page. If you are unsure as to what benefit you should be claiming, please email benefits@hertspartnership-ala-gov.uk or telephone 01279 655261 without delay.

Backdated benefits claims

Housing Benefit is normally awarded from the Monday following the day your claim is received by the Benefit Service at East Herts Council.

However, the law allows us to award Benefit from an earlier date if you have a good reason (good cause) for not applying earlier.

We can only backdate your Housing Benefit up to one month and your Council Tax Support up to six months from the date you ask us to, and you must give a good reason why this should be done.

If you or your partner have reached pension credit age, your claim covers any period in the three months before the day the claim is actually received (but only back to the day you reached pension credit age, or the day you became liable for rent or Council Tax, if these are later).

We will write to you within 14 days of you successfully filling in the form. If your claim is refused, details of how to appeal will be sent to you.
