Community Safety Projects

Details of our current Community Safety projects.

Scannet

East Herts Community Safety Partnership (CSP) is looking at working with some licensed premises (pubs, bars and clubs) within Bishop's Stortford and Hertford to introduce 'Scannet' machines.

What is Scannet?

Scannet requires those wishing to enter the premises to provide ID which would be scanned and stored. The scanners are able to scan and recognise over 3650 different documents. The system captures a photo of the person presenting the ID, stores an image of the ID itself and produces picture on the screen from document to compare with the image of person presenting the ID.

Why should it be used?

The scanner assesses the information against a national database, which contains details of people who are known for potential risks. It then alerts the operator to the information so a decision can be made as to whether to allow entry. Those banned through PubWatch can be inputted into the system to ensure they are recognised if they attempt to enter.

This system can greatly assist in reducing and detecting crime as it will have a record with who has entered the premises and at what time. Scannet can equally act as a deterrent if people know they are more likely to be identified if they cause problems, thus making it less likely for them to intentionally commit a crime or cause a nuisance.

It can also identify any fake or altered ID that may be being attempted to use.

What it will not be used for

Scannet is not aimed at gathering information about people and information is only stored or shared within strict Data Protection Guidelines. Scannet is already used in over 1000 premises within the UK and proving successful.

East Herts CSP wants to ensure that our towns remain safe places to live and visit and believe Scannet can help contribute to this. We are keen to hear the views of our residents though on this and would be grateful if you could complete our short survey:
