With temperatures set to stay low in the coming days we've put together a helpful guide with advice for bin collections and staying warm.

Bin Collections

At this time of year as temperatures drop the contents of your bins can become frozen. Our crews will attempt to empty frozen bins but sometimes the contents can become stuck.

To avoid your bin not being emptied please follow our top tips:

  • Check the lid of your bin will open before collection is due
  • If you have a lot of garden waste, do not squash it into the bin
  • Loosen the waste by sliding a spade between the contents and the side of the bin
  • If possible, store your bin in a slightly warmer place e.g. sheltered, against a wall or inside a garage or shed.

Crews will leave a notice if your bin has not been emptied as a result of being frozen.

You can check your collection day online on our 'Find your collection day' page

Staying warm

If you know anyone who is struggling, Hertfordshire County Council has put together a directory to help people find somewhere they can warm up this winter.

Find your nearest warm space on the Hertfordshire County Council website.

If you are a community organisation or group able to provide a warm space, you can sign up to be registered in the directory.
