Music and singing filled the foyer at Hertford Theatre recently as people celebrated the launch of the Hertfordshire Year of Culture 2020.

The Hertford U3A Ukulele Group nd Cottered Voices entertained guests representing arts and cultural organisations across East Herts.

Organised by East Herts Council, the evening was an opportunity for people to learn about how the council can support them during the year-long campaign across the county to showcase Hertfordshire’s creative opportunities.

East Herts Council in partnership with Hertfordshire Year of Culture 2020 (HYOC2020) will put the spotlight on arts, culture and heritage across the district and everyone is encouraged to get involved.

Eric Buckmaster, executive member for wellbeing, said: “I think if we have one common ambition from the launch this evening it is that we'd love to be surprised.

“We’d like to see individuals, clubs or associations reach out and try something new, beyond what they usually do, in discovering a wider community. Perhaps it will involve those who wouldn't have believed they could observe or participate in a cultural activity.

It is a chance for all of us to explore, to grow, and connect and share.”

Activities, special events and experiences will be taking place during 12 themed months that include promoting local museums and theatres, exploring the county’s culture in our towns and parks, encouraging you to try something new and getting involved with volunteering.

Cllr Buckmaster added that the council hoped the year of culture will help it to formulate a cultural strategy for East Herts that will “enable residents to enjoy the very best experiences in the arts and culture and improve the quality of life of all of us.
