Meet Alex, our customer service manager who swapped a career in retail for helping the residents of East Herts.

Tell us a little bit about yourself

I’ve recently turned 30 and live in Watford, where I enjoy sports, music and socialising in my spare time. I left a career in retail two years ago to join East Herts, first as a customer service team leader and now as customer services manager.

What job do you do?

My job includes performance analysis across the customer services team, identifying and implementing service improvements, working closely with other departments and councillors to achieve service delivery, key project involvement and supporting my customer service colleagues with their roles, including complaint management.

Why did you go into that area of work?

Like many people, I never knew for certain what industry I wanted to go into during my school years. I landed in a customer service role within retail very early in my career and decided it was a role I was well suited for and comfortable with. I decided to pursue this further and, so far, it has worked out well.

What is your career history

I come from a retail background having joined a high street retail chain straight from school. I progressed to middle management level where the majority of my roles were within customer service management. I left two years ago to join East Herts and haven’t looked back since.

What attracted you to work at East Herts?

I had some inside knowledge on local government and what to expect as several of my friends work within local authorities. At the time I was keen to go back into a customer service management role having already called time on my retail career and the opportunity at EHC appealed to me as it felt like it had the most to offer in terms of progression and career enhancement. Location-wise it was also among the most suitable – I’ve never been a fan of long distance commuting!

What are the benefits of working for East Herts?

I believe the salary scale is competitive, based on my previous roles. Our flexible way of working also allows a healthy work/life balance and I believe our agile working transition allows further improvement on this.

Why should people join East Herts?

East Herts offers career development and a great deal of flexibility to its staff. I feel this would be an exciting time to join the organisation also as we approach our transformation to a more digital way of working.
