Air quality messages for motorists

Motorists will notice some important air quality messages being displayed on electronic road signs throughout Hertfordshire, as well as on social media over the next few months.

The messages are kicking off East Herts Council's 2018 #KeepItClean campaign, working together with Hertfordshire County Council and other participating authorities, both within Hertfordshire and surrounding.

January's messages say:

AVOID SHARP BRAKING AND ACCELERATION

#KEEPITCLEAN

and

DRIVE AT SAFE STEADY SPEED

SAVE FUEL #KEEPITCLEAN

Following this advice not only keeps fuel costs down, it helps cut air pollution. Other monthly messages will remind motorists to check their tyre pressure regularly, consider car free days and use air conditioning instead of opening windows at speeds over 60mph.

The May and June campaign focuses on anti-idling and asks drivers to reduce harmful engine emissions simply by turning off their engine whilst stationary, with the message TURN YOUR KEY BE IDLE FREE.

It's estimated that air pollution causes the equivalent of 40,000 premature deaths each year in the UK. Studies also show that air pollution can slow the development of children's lungs, leading to lifelong consequences.
