Compulsory purchase order for empty Stortford home

July 27 2017 - A neglected house in a residential area of Bishop's Stortford has been recommended for a compulsory purchase order (CPO) by East Herts Council.

This is so that the council can bring it back into use through buying it and then selling it on the open market.

Neighbours have tried to maintain the front garden, but the property is in a poor state of repair which is having a negative impact on the neighbourhood.

The council has received a number of complaints and despite repeated attempts, there has been no response from the owner over the past two years.

Eric Buckmaster, executive member for health and wellbeing said: "I'm pleased the council has set the CPO process in motion. We're making tremendous efforts to encourage owners of empty homes to voluntarily bring them back into use and help reduce the housing shortage but as a last resort we need to use CPOs.

"We can assist the owners of empty properties in a number of ways including the offer of grants and using leasing schemes or other arrangements with housing providers to get the properties occupied again."

The council will now make the order and apply to the Secretary of State for confirmation.
