Senior Officer - EH (Environment)

Welcome from Paul Thomas-Jones, Service Manager - Environmental Health Welcome and thank you for taking the time to find out about this exciting career opportunity that East Herts Council's Environmental Health Service currently have to offer. I have recently been appointed to the role of Service Manager - Environmental Health, having previously been the lead for our commercial team within environmental health. Our new team is starting to come together through a mixture of internal promotion and outside appointments. I'm now looking to make the final appointment to my senior officers.

About the East Herts Environmental Health Service

The East Herts Environmental Health Service plays a pivotal role in protecting and promoting the health and wellbeing of the 145,000 residents of East Herts.

The East Herts Council area covers the eastern third of Hertfordshire, encompassing the bustling market towns of Hertford, Ware, Bishop's Stortford, Sawbridgeworth and Buntingford and large numbers of rural communities. This means we truly cover the full range of environmental health activities taking in air quality, contaminated land, land drainage, food safety, occupational health and safety, private sector housing, infectious disease control, private water supplies and certain licensing functions. So we feel it's a great place to gain experience of a wide variety of environmental challenges.

Our team is friendly and welcoming and we certainly have a strong sense of working for the community to make real changes to people's lives.

We have a track record of success and we are very keen to be at the leading edge of environmental health work. In recent years:

  • we were one of only a handful of district councils whose bid for Defra funding to tackle air pollution was successful - we are using the resources to introduce an electric car pool and promote electronic vehicle take up

  • our recently published Air Quality Action Plan was reported on in the national professional press

  • we are providing expert land drainage advice on a large council-led town centre regeneration scheme

  • our chief executive recently hosted the Turning Challenges into Opportunities workshop for Herts and Beds local authorities

  • we have been successful in several Residential Property Tribunals

  • we have successfully obtained a Compulsory Purchase Order on an empty property.
