Student Exemption & Discount Review 2017

We're carrying out a review of Council Tax discounts currently in place across East Herts. If you've received a request for information about your Student Exemption please complete our Review Form online.

  1. This form requires you to confirm the status of each named student OR provide information if the course and/or attendance has altered from the original application.

    For the purpose of a Council Tax Discount/Exemption, a Student is defined as a person who is undertaking a full time course of education which:-


    • Subsists for at least one academic year
    • Requires attendance for at least 24 weeks in each year; and;
    • Requires study, tuition or work experience for an average of 21 hours per week


    Or a qualifying course of education where :

    • The person must be aged under 20 years
    • The course must subsist for at least 3 calendar months
    • Exceeds 12 hours per week on relevant activities
    • Does not include evening classes or correspondence courses

    1. We will use the information you give in this form, and in any supporting evidence you send us, to process and calculate your Council Tax. We will normally keep your records for up to seven financial years, and then they will be destroyed securely.

      We may check and pass the information to certain third parties, other agencies or organisations such as the HM Revenues and Customs, as allowed by law to:

      • Make sure the information is accurate
      • Prevent or detect crime
      • Protect public funds.

      These third parties include government departments, local authorities and private-sector companies such as banks and organisations that may lend you money.

      We will not give information about you to anyone else, or use information about you for other purposes, unless the law allows us to.
