Facelift for Shop FrontsIntroduction(Article date: August 21, 2009) Vacant shop fronts will soon be given an arty makeover with East Herts Council's new project to spruce up empty shop windows with local art. The scheme was agreed in June and will now be piloted in a number of towns across the district including: Sawbridgeworth, Ware and Hertford which have seen some businesses fall prey to the recession, leaving empty shop fronts. East Herts Council is now seeking local artists and community groups including schools and colleges to put forward art works that they would like to display in the windows to make them more attractive. Executive member for planning policy and transport, Cllr Mike Carver said: "This is a really positive scheme, as not only will it make the shop fronts more attractive drawing more shoppers into the towns, but it is also a fantastic opportunity for our local artists to showcase their work in public. "In the current financial climate, it is vital that we do everything possible to make our towns as attractive as possible to shoppers and potential traders to ensure that we sustain the local economy to weather these hard times. This innovative scheme is a positive step forward to do exactly that." |
