Youngsters Recycle Tonnes of Phone Books

Introduction

June 24, 2008 Schoolchildren showed their support for a greener East Herts by recycling more than 3,000 Yellow Pages directories.

Twenty five schools in the district took part in the Yellow Woods Challenge – an educational and fun environmental campaign run by Yellow Pages, the Woodland Trust, East Herts Council and the council's refuse and recycling contractors Enterprise.

Pupils were encouraged to bring old directories into school for recycling while learning about green issues in the classroom. The schools competed against each other for the chance to win cash prizes from Yellow Pages and Enterprise for recycling the highest number of old directories per pupil.

Spellbrook Primary scooped the Gold Oak title and won £400 for recycling three directories per pupil.

The Silver Birch award and £300 prize money went to All Saints Church of England Primary School & Nursery, Bishop's Stortford while Widford School carried off the Bronze Beech certificate and £200 in cash.

A bonus prize of £150 went to Hollybush School, Hertford for creating the best artwork from the old directories collected and Pinewood Special School bagged a bonus prize of £100 for outstanding achievement.

The top-performing schools were honoured at a celebratory event in the council chamber at Pegs Lane, Hertford. Every school that took part will receive a certificate from campaign mascot, Kirk, a giant bright yellow and green woodland bug.

East Herts Council chairman Diane Hollebon said: "This was an excellent opportunity for schools and residents to work together to benefit the environment.

All the schools that competed should be very proud of themselves for collecting the directories and also for their truly wonderful imaginative sculptures which helped to raise funds for their schools."

Richard Duggleby, head of external relations at Yell, the publisher of Yellow Pages directories, said: "East Herts schools collected a grand total of 3,144 old directories, which will now be recycled into card and corrugated board."

For every pound awarded to schools by Yellow Pages a matching pound has been given to the Woodland Trust – the UK's leading woodland conservation charity. 'Seeds to trees' kits have also been awarded to the top three recycling schools and to Little Munden, Hollybush and Furneux schools for achieving 4th, 5th and 6th place.

Note to editors: The paper used for the UK's Yellow Pages directories contains 51 per cent recycled fibre plus wood fibres from forestry waste sustainably managed forests in Finland. Old directories can be recycled into cardboard, animal bedding, egg boxes, packaging and insulation materials and newsprint.
