Wind farm application blows inIntroductionJune 17, 2008 A planning application to put up three wind turbines in Benington has been received by East Herts Council this week and residents are invited to write in with their comments. You can see the documents at the council offices at Wallfields, Hertford as well as Hertford and Stevenage libraries. The basic drawings, but not the complete set, are also available on our website at We've notified local residents and site notices have been placed around the area and on village notice boards. Councillors are due to discuss the application at a Development Control Committee on September 24 so East Herts Council will take into consideration comments received by August 29. You can send in your comments in writing to: Director of Neighbourhood Services (Development Control) The application shows a turbine height of 119m to the tip of the blade and 78m to the hub height. It includes an 80m high meteorological mast and a substation on land east of Walkern Road and north and west of High Elms Lane. The application proposes new and upgraded access tracks as well as construction of hardstandings for cranes, an upgraded entrance to Walkern Road opposite Whitehall Farm and two new entrances onto High Elms Lane. Turbine cabling would be located underground. The proposed lifetime of the project is 25 years, after which the wind farm would be decommissioned unless a further application is granted. The average annual output of the proposed wind farm is claimed to be sufficient for about 2,680 homes, equivalent to 5.8% of East Herts homes (based on a 2MW output). East Herts Council's Executive member with responsibility for development control, Malcolm Alexander, said: "We'd like to encourage everyone who's interested to send in their comments. They'll be taken into consideration when the committee discusses the application in September." ENDS |
