Healthy investment in new equipment for council leisure centres

The mince pies and Christmas pudding were delicious and the good news is that it will be easier to burn off those extra calories thanks to £113,000 of exciting gym equipment at two East Herts Council gyms.

The council has just installed £84,000 of Technogym gym equipment at Fanshawe Pool and Gym in Ware. Leventhorpe Pool and Gym in Sawbridgeworth will receive £29,000 of new equipment in autumn.

In return, SLM-Everyone Active, which manages the leisure centres on the council's behalf, has agreed to reduce the management fee, saving the council £154,700 over the contract's seven remaining years.

Some of the new equipment at Fanshawe is specifically designed for wheelchair users and people with disabilities, putting the leisure centre among the best in the region for people on exercise referral schemes from their GP.

Linda Haysey, Executive member for health, housing and community support, said: "This investment is great for leisure centre users and makes excellent financial sense. It will encourage existing members to stay with us because they know they're getting the best that's out there. And it will help to attract new people to come along.

"Making a regular slot for exercise is good for everyone's health and it's a great way to start burning off those extra seasonal calories. So why not check out the membership deals and start your fitness programme this year."

In 2009 the council spent £3.5m on refurbishing Grange Paddocks and Hartham leisure centres. Membership figures increased by almost 75% following the project to 446,268 visits in 2010/11.
