Planning Dictionary

Introduction

Some of the terms used by our planning professionals during discussion, and in the reports, may be unfamiliar. Here is a selection of the main ones, with some explanation. If you think there is a term that we have left off, please let us know.

  • L.A.N.T.A.C. Scheme

    the Local Authority National Type Approval Consortium scheme.

  • Landmark building

    One that has become a point of reference because its height, siting, distinctive design or use sets it apart from surrounding buildings. Examples may include churches and town halls.

  • Lawful Development Certificate

    may be applied for to confirm that a proposal is permitted development or that a current unauthorised use has been operating long enough, and without a break, to render it immune from planning enforcement

  • Listed building

    one on a list of buildings of special architectural or historic interest compiled by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport under the provisions of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act, 1990.

  • Local Development Framework (LDF)

    the statutory policy framework for planning

  • Local Development Scheme (LDS)

    a three year project plan setting out the documents the Council intends to produce within its Local Development Framework and how and when it will involve the public in their preparation. The LDS is reviewed annually
