Introduction

Some of the terms used by our planning professionals during discussion, and in the reports, may be unfamiliar. Here is a selection of the main ones, with some explanation. If you think there is a term that we have left off, please let us know.

  • Traffic calming

    traffic management measures specifically designed to reduce speed along routes, particularly in residential areas, town centres, and near schools. There are twin objectives of reducing accidents and improving the local environment

  • Traffic management

    the process of adjusting or adapting the use of the highway to meet specified objectives without resorting to substantial new road construction

  • Traffic/Transport Impact Assessment (TRA)

    demonstrates the impact of a proposed development on the road network and road users, and includes the proposed measures to ameliorate any adverse impact

  • Tree Preservation Order (TPO)

    The Council has a duty under the Town & Country Planning Act 1990 to consider making TPOs in the interest of local amenity. Orders may specify and protect individual specimens, groups of trees, or areas of woodland
