Show time for Castle HallIntroduction(Article date: May 12, 2010) Castle Hall arts venue in Hertford may have seen its last performance, but the curtain will soon be rising on Hertford Theatre after a near £1m redevelopment project was approved by East Herts Council Executive last night (Tuesday). 
The extensive project will see the current Castle Hall theatre, foyer, box office and River Room transformed. It will also pave the way for a new dance studio, gallery area and bar and café all under the new name of Hertford Theatre. To complement the radical refurbishment of the venue, a new cinema programme is also being planned, with state of the art film projection and sound equipment. The programme will screen a range of recent releases, popular art house and children films. Those that prefer their entertainment live can look forward to a brand new pantomime produced by the team at the new Hertford Theatre later on this year. Linda Haysey, executive member for community development, leisure and culture said: "Castle Hall has become very tired and outdated and is in desperate need of a complete overhaul to maximise its potential. By re-branding it as Hertford Theatre, the project will breathe life into the venue and make it a place that everyone in Hertford can enjoy and be proud of. "The work will mean that the space could play host to a broad range of activities and draw in a great deal more visitors, making it a smart investment for the future of the council's finances." Work is set to begin on the programme at the beginning of June and Castle Hall will be closed while it is being carried out. The new look venue will re-open as Hertford Theatre at the end of autumn, ready for the professional pantomime in December.
