Housing

East Herts Council provides a range of housing services to its residents. As the strategic housing authority for East Hertfordshire we have a duty to consider the housing needs of all the resident of the district and ensure that they are met.

The housing Services is split into two sections, The Housing Options Service and the Housing Strategy and Development service.

You should contact the Housing Options Service if you:

  • Want to apply for affordable housing and be put on the housing register
  • Have any enquiries about the Housing register or your application
  • Are homeless are threatened with homeless
  • Need advice about a housing issue

  • Applying for Housing - Revision to Housing Register and Allocations Policy
    In response to Government changes in policy and legislation East Herts District Council has revised its Housing Register and Allocations policy to incorporate changes brought about by the Localism Act 2011 and the Armed Forces Regulations 2012 to better meet the needs of residents.
  • Important Information Affecting properties Allocated through HomeOption
    The Government are making some changes to social housing, which it says will make the allocation of housing fairer to all applicants. The changes also aim to ensure that the support which social housing provides is focused on those who need it most for as long as they need it.

  • Empty Homes
    Long term empty homes are a wasted resource; they can cause problems for their owners and have a negative impact in their neighbourhood.

    Residents living in either Riversmead Housing Association or South Anglia Housing Association properties are able to receive a community alarm service directly from them. If you live in your own property or rent from a private or other social landlord you will also be able to receive a community alarm service from the Riversmead Housing Association.

  • Homelessness
    If you are homeless or threatened with homelessness in the next 28 days and you have no suitable accommodation available to you to occupy you should contact the Council's Housing Options Team.
  • Housing Development
    We commission registered social landlords to provide new affordable housing to meet the needs identified in the district. These include general needs, supported housing needs and the needs of key workers.
  • Housing Options Service
    The Housing Options Service provides a free impartial and confidential advice service for people who need help with housing issues.
  • Sources of Advice for those facing financial and housing difficulties
    If you are facing financial difficulties there are many local, regional and national organisations that offer free and independent advice. Here is a list of contacts which may be helpful for people who need help and guidance in the following areas:
  • Strategic Housing Service
    The council has a duty to consider the housing needs of all the residents of the district and to produce and deliver strategic housing plans that set out the plans for tackling these needs.
  • Private Sector Housing
    We are responsible for ensuring that private housing in East Herts is fit to live in, is in a good state of repair and has sufficient amenities eg kitchen and toilet facilities.
  • Supporting People in Hertfordshire (Housing Related Support)
    Supporting People funds services which provide housing-related support. Its aim is to prevent homelessness and help people do things for themselves so that they can continue living at home, rather than go into hospital or residential care.
