ARC - Alternate Refuse Collections, the new Waste and Recycling programme

Introduction

On 2 November 2009 a new waste and recycling programme was introduced

The new waste and recycling service allows us to respond to your requests to recycle more and help you to protect the environment as well as controlling the growing cost of waste disposal.

East Herts produces around 56,000 tonnes of waste every year and currently recycles 35%. But we want to do even better. We aim to increase our recycling rate and reduce waste even further over the next few years and you can help!

In November 2009, there were significant changes to your refuse and recycling service known as ARC. This stands for Alternate Refuse Collection. As well as increasing the amount of waste that is recycled which is essential for conserving resources, ARC will also help to control the growing costs of sending waste to landfill and reduce the harmful impacts that waste disposal has on our environment.

Your actions of recycling more materials and removing food waste from landfill will directly affect the amount of methane and carbon dioxide released into the environment which affects climate change.

Every household affected by this change has been given a leaflet and calendar detailing collection days.  To see a video explaining more about ARC, please visit the ARC News and Media page

What are the main changes?

You will receive a new blue box into which you can place plastic bottles and cans for recycling. This will be collected fortnightly at the same time as your green box for paper and glass. Link to Blue and Green Recycling Boxes

Your brown bin will be able to accept food waste and cardboard with the garden waste. This will be collected fortnightly on the same day as your recycling boxes. Link to Brown Bin

Your black bin will be collected fortnightly on the alternate week to your recycling boxes and brown bin. Link to Black Bin
